Christa McAuliffe Middle
Your child has the opportunity to choose a full year course of Beginning Band at Christa McAuliffe Middle School. This course offers beginning instruction on all of the band instruments. Classes begin by teaching the students basic musical and instrumental concepts. Students do not need to have any prior musical experience. By the end of the first year these students acquire enough expertise to become members of the Challenger Advanced Cadet Band.
Students who elect to enroll in this class will need to supply an instrument. These can be purchased or rented from $15.00 to $50.00 per month at most local music stores. I recommend that you rent an instrument for the first year. Usually the amount of rent paid applies toward the purchase price if you should decide to buy the instrument later. Prices differ at different music stores. A limited number of instruments are available for rental from the school for $50.00. Please DO NOT purchase or rent an instrument at this time. During the first week of school I will demonstrate and fit students for instruments. Fitting of instruments is needed to select the proper instrument for your child. This helps ensure successful musical experience.
I hope you and your child will make this investment in his/her education. Band provides many benefits and opportunities that go beyond music. Some of the more obvious benefits are increased self discipline, self esteem, increased scores on standardized tests, and working with others. We have had a very successful program here at McAuliffe, and I would like to have your child become a part of it. If you have any questions about the Band program at Christa McAuliffe, please feel free to call me at 374-6617 between 8:30 and 9:30 A.M., after 4:05, or leave a message at 374-6617.
Students meet in class daily and are expected to have their instruments and supplies with them each day. These include their instrument, book, a pencil and what ever supplies that may be needed by a particular instrument. Students are expected to participate every day.
Musical instruments are available from two primary sources. The first is music stores, which rents Flutes, Clarinets, Alto Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones, and Percussion Kits. The second source is the school which rents French Horns, Baritone/Euphoniums, Tubas, and Bass Clarinets.
If a child selects an instrument from the first group you will need to rent an instrument from a music store. There are many in the area which specialize in this business. Rental rates vary as does quality of instrument. Most stores have a "rent to own" plan. What this means is that the money you pay for rental applies toward the purchase of the instrument at the end of the year. I cannot list all the details because they vary from store to store.
Children selecting the French Horn, Baritone/Euphonium, or Tuba must rent an instrument from Christa McAuliffe (you could try to rent from a music store but you will probably find the price prohibative). These students will be responsible for the purchase a mouthpiece if they play a brass instrument rented from Christa McAuliffe.
All students will need to purchase a book and other miscellaneous supplies listed in the supply section.
